Red Thread Series—

Lure #1 and Lure #2 are two installations created at Friskers Artist Residency in Finland. Based on the Red Thread Chinese Legend, which tells that when children are born, they are connected with their destined mate by an invisible red thread.

Small round disks are made from tightly coiled red thread. Each disk is connected to another, as a "couple", and each pair is made from one thread. These disks are then suspended a few inches from the ground, each pierced by a needle. Subtle air current encourages the disks to sway and turn gently like lily pads on water, while the red lines on the ground cross and tangle. With a little effort, visitors can discover the "connected couples", though the swaying disks have their own "moves" and "affairs" regardless of the lines and connections beneath.
